UP Express, GO Barrie and Kitchener lines shut down this weekend for construction

A major transit shutdown hits the Greater Toronto Area this weekend as the UP Express, GO Barrie Line, and GO Kitchener Line all suspend service for planned construction.

The UP Express—the 23-kilometre rail link connecting downtown to Pearson Airport—will be fully closed Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13. Metrolinx is replacing trains with direct GO buses between Union Station Bus Terminal and Pearson Airport Terminal 1. There will be no UP Express service at Bloor, Mount Dennis, or Weston stations during the closure.

GO Train service halts on the Barrie Line between Downsview Park GO and Union Station both days. On the Kitchener Line, trains will not run from Stratford or Kitchener stations to Mount Pleasant station this weekend, and no service will operate between Mount Dennis and Union Station.

The TTC is also affected. Line 2 will open late on Sunday, September 13, with shuttle buses replacing trains from the start of service until 11 a.m. as part of planned infrastructure maintenance.

The transit agencies have not disclosed the specific construction projects underway, expected impact on ridership, or alternative service frequency and wait times for replacement buses. Pearson Airport has not released a statement on potential passenger impact.
