A 19-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting at the US Consulate last March, as police continue investigating what they describe as a "guns-for-hire" operation across the GTA.

The arrest follows numerous others related to a scheme in which young people are hired to carry out gun violence on behalf of other parties. Targets have included synagogues, Jewish schools, and the US Consulate.

Earlier this week, a police officer was fatally shot while conducting a search warrant related to these cases. Another 19-year-old, Nicholas Bennett, is now charged with murder in connection to Constable Marc Pinizzotto's death.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw said the North York raid was linked to 27 shootings in the GTA. "What we are dealing with in this case and in other unrelated incidents, including shootings at synagogues and Jewish schools, is a recurring and similar modus operandi," Demkiw said at a news conference, "and that is criminals for hire."
