Toronto drivers should brace for significant road disruptions during the FIFA World Cup, with closures affecting major routes around Exhibition Place starting Friday.
Closures will begin up to five hours before each kickoff and remain in place for as long as three hours after matches end. All six games are being held at Toronto Stadium at Exhibition Place, and thousands of fans are expected to attend each match.
Roads affected include:
Strachan Avenue will be completely closed from Lake Shore Boulevard to East Liberty Street. Two lanes on the east side between Lake Shore Boulevard and Fleet Street will remain open for those accessing the Enercare Centre parking lot.
Fleet Street will see a full closure from Angelique Street to Strachan Avenue for the duration of the tournament to facilitate a dedicated streetcar platform for transit users.
Dufferin Street will be closed from Springhurst Avenue to Saskatchewan Road.
Lake Shore Boulevard West will experience lane closures and restrictions in the Exhibition Place area.
The City of Toronto is encouraging drivers to avoid the area entirely and use transit instead. With the tournament beginning this week, residents should plan extra commute time for any travel near the waterfront or through downtown during match days. The city will post specific closure times as games are scheduled.
