Safeway has officially returned to Oakridge with its largest Metro Vancouver location, a 50,000-square-foot flagship store that drew several hundred shoppers who began lining up before the 10 a.m. Thursday opening.
The grocery chain abandoned its previous Oakridge Centre location in January 2020 in preparation for the mall's complete demolition and redevelopment. The new store spans two underground levels plus a partial upper mezzanine, with main entrance access at the mall's south atrium next to Aritzia and secondary access from Cambie Street near West 41st Avenue.
As HighOnCity reported in May, Oakridge Park itself opened earlier this summer as Vancouver's reimagined luxury mall, anchored by a 7.5-acre rooftop urban public park. The Chanel flagship debuted in June.
The new Safeway sets itself apart with an Asian market and international grocery selection, expanded fresh and prepared food offerings including Asian hot foods, dim sum, freshly made sushi and pizza, custom sandwiches, and a large seafood department with live tanks. Premium offerings include dry-aged beef. Chinese-language signage complements English throughout the store, and an in-store Starbucks cafe is included.
Vancouver city councillor Lisa Dominato attended Thursday's grand opening, saying the store will play an important role as Oakridge Park evolves into a high-density, mixed-use neighbourhood with thousands of new homes.
