A 37-year-old man has been charged after an alleged assault at Redwood Park in South Surrey on September 9 escalated into a vehicle collision and knife chase caught on video.
Surrey Police Service responded to Redwood Park near 179th Street and 20th Avenue at approximately 4:45 p.m. after receiving a report of an alleged assault. Police say Richard Mark James Evoy drove a Jeep Wrangler into a victim's Ford pickup truck. The victim attempted to drive away and then fled on foot. Evoy allegedly brandished a knife and chased the victim.
A nearby witness driving a Tesla provided the victim safety until police arrived. A video of the incident was shared on social media and viewed by millions of people; Surrey Police confirmed it captured the same incident.
Evoy has been charged with one count of assault with a weapon, one count of assault, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of criminal harassment and one count of uttering threats. He has been remanded into custody pending a court appearance to set his next scheduled date.
Police are asking anyone who has information about the incident and has yet to speak with police to contact Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and reference file 26-96726 (SP). As HighOnCity reported in September, a photographer's quick thinking had saved a victim in a knife chase at the same park.
