Photographer's quick thinking saves victim in knife chase at South Surrey park

A 37-year-old man is facing multiple criminal charges after an alleged assault and knife chase at Redwood Park in South Surrey on Sept. 9.
Richard Mark James Evoy was arrested after he rammed a white Ford pickup truck with a Jeep Wrangler, allegedly attacked another man with a knife, and chased the victim. The incident was filmed by Robin Nuber, a photographer who had arrived at the park for a scheduled family photoshoot. When the victim ran toward Nuber's Tesla, clinging to the side of the vehicle as Nuber reversed away, Nuber continued driving because Evoy kept pursuing them. "He was holding on for dear life. I think the police officer said I dragged him for about 100 feet and (he) obviously got some road rash from that," Nuber said.
Once Evoy lost momentum and gave up the chase, Nuber pulled over and witnessed Evoy toss the knife into the woods nearby. Police arrested Evoy moments after arriving on scene.
Evoy, the victim, and a woman visible in video footage are all known to each other. Surrey Police Service said the incident is not believed to be random. Evoy is known to police for previous property-related crimes.
Evoy has been charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats and criminal harassment. He remains in custody with a court appearance expected Monday. The charges have not been tested in court.
"Thankfully, the quick actions and quick thinking and quite frankly the good reverse driving skills of the witness were able to get the victim—who could have suffered some significant injuries, potentially—to safety before our officers were able to get there," said Surrey Police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton. Nuber completed his scheduled family photoshoot at the park after the incident.
