West Broadway between Cambie and Alberta will shut down to all vehicles and transit buses starting Monday, July 20, remaining closed for approximately six months as final subway construction work wraps up.

The closure begins just one day after the FIFA World Cup ends on July 19. During the shutdown, the busy 99 B-Line and all other vehicle traffic will detour north along West 8th Avenue between Alberta and Ash Streets. Pedestrian sidewalks stay open, so local businesses remain accessible on foot.

To manage the detour, the city will remove curbside parking along the three-block stretch of West 8th Avenue and install temporary traffic measures, signage, and fencing. Drivers and transit riders should expect significant extra travel time; the city recommends using West 12th Avenue to the south or West 2nd Avenue to the north as alternative east-west routes.

Over the coming days before the closure begins, crews will conduct preparatory work including road cleaning, line painting, landscaping, and electrical work. Once closed, crews will dismantle the temporary traffic bridge structures that sit above the Millennium Line's Broadway-City Hall Station and a major track switch. The work also involves filling excavation above the tunnel roof with gravel, completing new underground utilities, and constructing the permanent roadway.
