Two blocks of West Broadway between Cambie Street and Alberta Street are now closed to all vehicles through late 2026 or early 2027 to make way for a critical phase of the Broadway Subway construction.
The closure began at noon on Monday, July 20. Pedestrian sidewalks on the two blocks remain open for businesses and residents. General vehicle traffic and TransLink buses—including the busy 99 B-Line and No. 9 UBC/Boundary—are detouring along West 8th Avenue via intersections at Cambie and Alberta streets.
Concrete barriers have been installed, and new bus-only lanes are in place to help TransLink buses make turns through the detour route. New temporary traffic signals and turning restrictions are now active at Cambie's intersections with both Broadway and 8th Avenue. The westbound bus stops for the 99 B-Line and No. 9 serving Broadway-City Hall Station have been moved slightly closer to the end of the block, while the eastbound stop for the 99 B-Line has relocated nearly one block west near Ash Street.
Major vehicle traffic congestion was observed shortly after the noon closure, especially for eastbound traffic on West Broadway heading toward Cambie. Drivers and bus passengers are advised to allow extra travel time and consider West 2nd Avenue or West 12th Avenue as alternative east-west routes.
The closure is necessary to safely remove temporary traffic bridge structures that span above the Millennium Line's new Broadway-City Hall subway station structure and a major crossover track switch.
