Broadway Subway track installation reaches 100% completion ahead of late 2027 opening

Track installation on Vancouver's Broadway Subway is complete. Running rails, power rail, and linear induction motor rails are now installed in both directions across the full 5.7-kilometre extension of the SkyTrain's Millennium Line to Arbutus, the province announced this week.

The milestone clears the way for advanced testing to begin gradually across all segments. That testing will culminate in stress testing under real-world conditions closer to the late 2027 opening date—trains running all day at normal frequencies and stopping at each new station. Initial testing work began in spring 2026 on segments with fully completed tracks.

Construction has shifted to installing utilities, filling in below-grade space above the six new subway stations' structures, completing entrance buildings and interiors, and rebuilding streets and sidewalks. West Broadway between Cambie and Alberta streets has been closed to all vehicles since late July for work at the Broadway-City Hall Station site; it's expected to fully reopen in January 2027. Buses and other vehicles are diverted along 8th Avenue via Cambie and Alberta. East Broadway between Quebec and Alberta will require a full four-month closure for Mount Pleasant Station work. Partial vehicle lane closures are also required at Arbutus, South Granville, and Oak-VGH stations.

Above-ground entrance work is well underway at Great Northern Way–Emily Carr Station. Meanwhile, the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain project—a 16-kilometre elevated guideway along Fraser Highway formally named the Dave Barrett Extension—is approximately 65 per cent complete, with eight elevated stations planned to extend the Expo Line from King George Station to Langley City Centre.
