Canada will face South Africa in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 on Sunday, June 28, but the match is in Los Angeles, not at home — and getting there costs more than the tickets themselves.

Non-stop flights from Vancouver to Los Angeles are already sold out. Connecting flights with stops in Denver or Dallas range from $885 to $1,050 (with checked baggage) for a Saturday departure and Monday return. A one-way ticket from Calgary or Montreal can run $986 to $1,014.

Some Canadian fans have decided to drive instead. Dalen Brueckner, attending from Edmonton, said the cheapest flight he could find was $1,600 return. "Now we are on a fun little road trip," he said, planning a 22-hour drive with two other supporters.

The good news: World Cup tickets have plummeted since South Korea's upset loss to South Africa on Wednesday evening. Los Angeles has a massive Korean population, and fans are offloading tickets. Supporters' tickets now start around $88 for Category 4 or $375 to $850 otherwise — far cheaper than before the Korea loss, when the cheapest ticket was around $4,000.

The match is at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Hotel rates near the venue range from under $100 to over $400 per night, depending on comfort level. If you book a ticket for $585, a flight for $885, and two hotel nights at $250, a complete package lands around $1,720 — solid value for a World Cup knockout stage, though travel times and flight costs remain the biggest barrier for Canadian supporters.
