The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Brendan Gallagher from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade announced Monday, June 29.
Gallagher, 34, is entering the final year of his contract with a $6.5-million cap hit. The Canadiens are retaining 50 per cent, bringing his cost to the Canucks to $3.25 million. In return, Montreal receives future considerations.
Gallagher spent 14 seasons with the Canadiens before the trade. He grew up in Tsawwassen and played junior hockey with the Vancouver Giants, where he led the franchise in goals (136) and points (280 in 244 games).
In an recent interview, Gallagher expressed his desire to return home. "That would be good for me and my family," he said. "My wife is pregnant right now, by the time next season starts we're going to have two little ones under two, so having family around is something that I have to think about."
The 5-foot-9 right winger scored 23 points (7-16-23) in 77 games for Montreal this season. He is expected to help set the standard for the Canucks' younger players, according to GM Ryan Johnson, who also dealt Nils Höglander to Nashville earlier Monday.
