A 67-year-old downtown Vancouver man has been charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose after allegedly wielding an electric chainsaw near a coffee shop patio Wednesday, July 8.

According to Vancouver Police Department, the incident unfolded around 7 p.m. near Davie and Denman streets when David Meadows started yelling obscenities near a coffee shop patio. He then allegedly turned on an electric chainsaw and began walking toward people. Bystanders ran away from the man; no one was injured.

Meadows was arrested at Beach Avenue and Burnaby Street within three minutes of the 911 call. Crown Counsel approved the weapon charge Thursday. Police also recovered additional items, including a knife.
