Baldeep Chahal, 38, of Surrey, has been charged with 12 criminal counts in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed six-year-old Jayla Chang on April 14, 2025.
The collision occurred at approximately 4 p.m. at the intersection of 164th Street and 108th Avenue in Surrey. A grey pickup truck struck Jayla, her seven-year-old sister Jordyn, and her 16-year-old brother Kohen. Jayla died from her injuries. Jordyn suffered a broken clavicle and non-life-threatening injuries. Kohen sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The vehicle did not stop at the scene but was located nearby after striking at least one parked vehicle. The driver was arrested shortly after the vehicle was found. Police allege Chahal's blood-alcohol concentration showed impairment.
Chahal faces one count of dangerous driving causing death, one count of impaired driving causing death, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, and one count of failing to stop after being involved in an accident resulting in death.
Chahal's first court appearance is scheduled for October 1 at Surrey provincial court. Prosecutors have approved all charges.
