Vancouver police detective arrested on fraud and theft charges

Kal Dosanjh, a Vancouver Police detective and founder of the KidsPlay Foundation, was arrested Thursday morning outside his home and charged with multiple counts of fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, and one count of breach of trust by a public officer.
Dosanjh has been with the Vancouver Police Department for more than 25 years and served as a senior detective in the Financial Crimes Unit. He founded KidsPlay Foundation in 2015, an organization with locations across Canada and internationally in India, Colombia and Uganda. The foundation runs sports camps, educational forums, mentorship programs and community patrols, with a stated aim of "keeping B.C. kids away from a life of crime."
Before founding KidsPlay, Dosanjh spent 15 years on patrol in the Downtown Eastside and ran organized sports programs through the police athletic league for inner-city youth. He received both the King Charles III Coronation medal and Queen's Platinum Jubilee medal.
Dosanjh's co-accused is Sarabjit Singh Gill, who faces multiple counts of fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000. The alleged offences are dated to January 13, 2017 and December 18, 2017. Plain-clothes and uniformed officers were seen removing boxes of documents from Dosanjh's residence Thursday afternoon.
Vancouver Police conducted the investigation. The charges have not been tested in court. Vancouver police said they will provide additional information at a news conference Friday, though a specific time was not announced. Court Services Online records show the charges laid.
