Man dies after fight at Port Haney wharf in Maple Ridge
RCMP investigating isolated incident; gang activity not believed to be a factor.
A 28-year-old man died Sunday after a waterfront altercation in Maple Ridge. Maple Ridge RCMP were called shortly before 7 p.m. to the Port Haney wharf in the 22300-block of River Road, where they found him with life-threatening injuries. He died despite efforts by first responders.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called in and is working with the RCMP serious crime unit, forensics, and the B.C. Coroners Service. Investigators believe the incident was isolated and targeted — the two people involved knew each other. Gang activity is not believed to be a factor, though a weapon was involved in the altercation.
"Thanks to the quick actions taken by Maple Ridge RCMP officers, the scene was contained quickly which allowed investigators to preserve critical evidence," said IHIT Sgt. Freda Fong.
Witness interviews are ongoing as investigators piece together events leading to the fight. Anyone with information is asked to contact IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 or email ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
