A motorhome crashed through Abbotsford International Airport's perimeter fence and drove onto an active runway Saturday afternoon, forcing pilots to abort landings and divert to a different runway.
The incident happened just after 4:32 p.m. when a pilot preparing to land received an urgent radio call: "Pull up and go around immediately." Seconds later, the tower controller added: "I am not talking to that vehicle. They are going on the runway."
None of the commercial flights bound for Calgary, Edmonton, and Toronto were in the airspace at the time — they had either departed earlier or were scheduled for later in the evening — but a handful of general aviation aircraft were either flying or preparing to take off. Controllers directed them to hold altitude and take off from an alternate runway while police responded.
The 53-year-old Abbotsford driver was arrested and remained in police custody Saturday evening. Abbotsford Police said investigators have ruled out impaired driving as a contributing factor. No injuries were reported.
