Two dead in Surrey stabbing; police shooting under review
Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and police watchdog investigating after stabbing leaves two dead and one injured, ending with officer-involved shooting.
Two people are dead and one injured following a stabbing in Surrey on Friday that ended in a police shooting, prompting investigations by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team and the Independent Investigations Office.
Surrey Police officers responded to reports of an assault around 1 p.m. on Friday and found two people suffering stab wounds. A 55-year-old man died at the scene despite life-saving efforts. A 35-year-old woman was transported to hospital for treatment.
Officers located the stabbing suspect nearby. The interaction ended with police firing shots. The 65-year-old man was transported to hospital but later died of his injuries. The IIO is investigating police actions in the case.
The 55-year-old victim lived in the same building as the suspect. Investigators believe the surviving victim was in the vicinity of the building. Though motivation remains under investigation, IHIT said police believe the man who was shot by police was responsible for both stabbings and there are no outstanding suspects.
IHIT Sergeant Freda Fong said in a statement: "Though the alleged suspect is now deceased, IHIT will continue a fulsome investigation into the sequence of events in hopes of uncovering the motivation and sequence of events behind what appears to be an unprovoked attack. We extend our thoughts to the family members of the deceased as well as the surviving victim."
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact IHIT.
